website guide

your website

Your website will be a creation as unique as you are, shaped by your personal preferences and intentions for the site. Our goal is to create, with you, exactly what you want and need as efficiently as possible. Your website is one of the most important investments you'll make in the success of your business or cause, so never hesitate to ask questions or make your desires more clear.

what do you need

~ Spend some time thinking about what you want your site to accomplish and what features will be required to achieve that purpose. Do you need to take donations or have an e-commerce option?  Are you interested in a blog, the ability to post updates at your leisure, a slideshow, a search engine, or an email collection form? Look at other sites of a similar nature, take note of what you find effective.

~ How does your content break down into specific pages? Layout your site in pages and segregate content appropriately. Work with it until it fits in the smallest number of pages and flows well between those pages - the simpler the better. This tends to be difficult for those with a lot of content. Painted Mountain Design can help you organize your layout if you get stuck.

what do you want

Believe it or not, this is the universally most difficult aspect of a new site! How do you want your site to appear?

~ What colors do you like? Do you have imagery you want to incorporate? What styles are attractive to you? What fonts are you drawn to? Do you like buttons on the sides or top and bottom? What tone conveys the nature of your business?

~ Spend some time looking very critically at other websites and take note of what is appealing to you and suitable for your site and what is not. Look at all of the details - colors, fonts, layout, styles, backgrounds, etc.

costs

Why research and answer all of these questions? Because the more choices you make in advance, the fewer costs you will incur as we work together. Websites designed with minimal input from clients in the beginning always take more time and cost more money in the end.

That said, for a basic website (such as this one) expect to spend in the range of $300-$700 for the site template (the design & layout of pages only). The additional costs of populating the template with your content depend on the quantity of your material, the complexity of your desired features and the number of revisions we end up making.

Other basic, necessary costs include the fee for your domain name (ex. PaintedMountainDesign.com, approximately $10/year) and the fee for web hosting (the service which will store your files and optional email, approximately $10-$20/month). Depending on the features you want for your site, we may need to buy video software, e-commerce packages, slideshows, advanced search engines, etc.  Much of this can be found for free, but it all depends on what you need.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions whatsoever.
